    SSS is seeking a Research Assistant to assist with protocol development, laboratory support, and study implementation activities for clinical studies under an existing contract with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), as well as clinical trials and other public health research projects initiated and funded by other Federal Agencies. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual with effective communication and organizational skills. The position will be based in Bethesda, MD at the NIH Clinical Center with tasks being assigned by the Project Manager, Laboratory Manager, investigators and other staff.


    Assist with research laboratory tasks such as sample inventory, processing, shipping and retrieval.  May also assist with study coordination of multiple projects and administrative responsibilities.  Requires ability to multi task and manage time effectively with minimal supervision.


    Essential Functions

    • Assists with, and occasionally leads, tasks related to bio-specimen sample tracking and transport according to protocol requirements.
    • Assists with organizing lab files, supplies, inventory of lab materials and sample retrieval/pulls.
    • Assists with the shipment of biological samples per NIH and other oversight regulations.
    • Assists with creation and modification of laboratory manuals.
    • Provides monthly/ad-hoc reports.
    • Attends all relevant clinical team meetings.
    • Supports clinical research coordinators and other research assistants on project operation duties including, data clean-up, record collection, study planning, patient recruitment, regulatory tracking, and chart inventory.
    • Provides routine administrative and clerical support as needed.


    Skills Required

    • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work-flow and procedures
    • Ability to enter and audit data into web/PC-based software using Windows based applications
    • Basic laboratory skills, understanding of regulatory compliance
    • Ability to write reports and provide task updates to supporting Coordinators or Manager
    • Able to work well in team environment
    • Conduct office or work unit procedures, methods, and practices with a degree of independence
    • Works well with minimal supervision

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Strong proficiency with MS Word, Outlook, and Excel, full MS Office experience preferred
    • Experience working in a research environment
    • Familiarity with NIH regulations around conducting human subjects research
    • Experience with patient chart review, data entry, cleaning and/or data management
    • Knowledge of medical terminology


    Education or Equivalent Experience:

    • Graduation from high school or GED.  Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least 2 years of research project or laboratory assistance; 4-year degree preferred
