Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. (SSS) is seeking a Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner to support a clinical research conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Research projects include clinical studies investigating autoimmune diseases and other conditions with environmental influences. We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual with solid clinical knowledge and effective communication and organizational skills. Experience in clinical research desired. The position is for full-time employment with SSS based in Bethesda, MD at the NIH Clinical Center. The position does not include on-call scheduling and largely follows a regular business day shift schedule.

 

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities for this position involve supporting clinical and operational activities associated with the conduct of a FDA-regulated clinical trial. The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple tasks at once. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Screening, consenting, and enrolling participants
  • Conducting physical exams
  • Ordering and review lab results
  • Scheduling other diagnostic and research procedures for participants
  • Providing care to participants on protocol under physician supervision
  • Completing and reviewing study forms
  • Completing all clinical reporting requirements related to the study, including daily progress notes, summary dictations, adverse event report forms, and documents for DSMB meetings
  • Overseeing and providing feedback on study operations, study documents and study data
  • Collaborating on study amendments and supporting regulatory documents as necessary
  • Performing other research tasks, such as acquiring outside tissue specimens, evaluating study questionnaires for completeness, sample processing (including basic lab work with potentially infectious agents), and adjudicating data entry  
  • Providing clinical support for other ongoing research activities, as appropriate
  • Attending study team meeting

Qualifications

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to handle complex consults and medications
  • Familiarity with administration of fluids
  • Ability to acquire disease specific knowledge through training by other physicians
  • Ability to function independently, following training
  • Excellent communication and patient relation skills
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize workflow and procedures
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to work well in a team environment
  • Application of office or work unit procedures, methods, and practices with a degree of independence
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in problem situations
  • Comfortable working with adult and pediatric (> 8 years of age) patients
  • Able to use electronic medical record system and work with a variety of computer applications

 EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE

  • Prior clinical research experience
  • Prior inpatient care experience
  • Graduation from an accredited program, certified by NCCPA, ANCC or AANP, and licensed to practice in Maryland
  • NIH-credentials desired, but not required
